A Conversation with Dr. Brazil
What about dermatology inspires you?
I’m privileged to work with children, adults and geriatric patients in my practice; they make my days more rewarding to have known and helped them. Dermatology provides an intellectual outlet that’s constantly evolving and challenging. After 28+ years of practicing medicine, I still enjoy going to work. As I told my two children when they entered college, consider what your chosen career will mean to you after years of repetition.
“I have been going to this clinic for many years. Everyone is very professional and caring. I like it when doctors take time to talk to you and make you feel comfortable. I see Lin, Suzanne and Dr Brazil. Love them all.”
— Olympic Dermatology medical patient, December 2018
What is your vision for Olympic Dermatology?
To provide the highest quality dermatologic care possible to the most people. We’ve created a medical practice that consumes my day beyond my wildest dreams, which is great for a hands-on guy like me. But it wouldn’t be possible without the amazing professionals in our office. I enjoy working with our Physician Assistants and clinical nurses that help me provide medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology excellence to our patients. Everyone in our office, from the front desk to the exam room and business office, was chosen for their commitment to excellence and their many years at Olympic Dermatology are testament to it. The next big step will be to expand with another physician to help care for our growing number of patients and provide continuity for the future.
What sets Olympic Dermatology apart?
Olympic Dermatology is the only medical facility in Washington to be recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Dermatology & Laser Industry. We provide the highest quality of individualized care in a safe, effective and technologically-innovative way, and use a wide array of proven treatments and technology with the highest success rate. Dermatology is a unique specialty, offering the “holy triad” of direct medical care, surgical expertise and dermatopathology skills. Not all dermatologists take advantage of all three but for me they are intertwined. My experience and expertise in one complements my skills in the others, which benefits our patients. It’s also what keeps my days fresh and exciting!
What occupies you when you’re not helping patients?
I’m a family-focused person and I love the outdoors. My wife Tammy and our children Molly and Sam have shared my love for climbing mountains, skiing backcountry terrain, scuba diving around the world, and visiting remote villages in faraway lands. We enjoy weekends skiing at Crystal Mountain, our time boating the Inside Passage, long backpacking trips through Pacific Northwest mountains and many years of Oregon Duck football. I’m blessed with a great family who loves to spend time with me!
Why is local community outreach so important to you?
The South Sound is an amazing place to live; perfect for a fulfilling career and family life. I was raised in Sublimity, Oregon on a family farm homesteaded 120 years ago. I feel a responsibility to our community. I enjoy sponsoring as many local arts organizations as possible and helping Providence St. Peter Foundation with its mission of providing a stable medical platform for the entire community. I offer free annual skin cancer screening clinics and help former gang members reclaim their lives by removing unwanted tattoos with the “Ink out Tattoos” youth program. I’m a clinical instructor in dermatology to University of Washington/Providence St. Peter Hospital family practice residents and served as Thurston-Mason County Medical Society President and Washington State Medical Association Trustee. I love giving back to a community and profession that have given me so much.
