Why Select Physician Based Cosmeceuticals?
The media is bombarded with hot new skin care products that promises results equal to Botox and/or a face lift. However, over the counter (OTC) products are restricted by the FDA as to the concentration and type of ingredients that can be used. In spite of the polished ads and claims, it is difficult to produce an OTC topical cosmetic that can actually penetrate the skin surface and affect collagen deep in the dermis. Bottom line, they are simply cosmetics with limited scientific research and published outcomes.
However, products purchased in our office are more rigorously investigated. They are unique as to the type of compounds, concentrations, and the clinical research conducted before the cosmeceutical is brought to market. The term cosmeceutical denotes a “marriage” of cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. In the chemistry of cosmetic products, the ingredients are just one component in determining the effectiveness. What makes a cosmeceutical effective is the careful selection of ingredients, an adequate dose concentration, a stable and physiological formulation, and a delivery system that can get the product deep into the skin layers.
